Community Forum on Canadian and US Imperialism
I am reaching out to you since some of us have been sharing our concern at the imminent US intervention in Venezuela, which builds on a history of interventions in Latin and Central America every time these nations have tried to control and socialize their resources (not insignificantly, Venezuela is one of the top oil producers in the world). The campaign to destabilize Venezuela during the Chavista governments is reminiscent of Chile in 1973 and more recently, the more “subtle” strategy of a soft-coup in Honduras in 2009, and Brazil in 2016.
I invite you to a community discussion on February 24th between 2 and 4pm at the CNYC (905 20 St W) to make connections between US imperialism and Canada’s settler colonialism, share stories of exile and migration from different communities, and discuss the role of Canada’s foreign policies in the Global South, including the Canadian state’s support of mining companies abroad with awful human rights violations records.
Come in the spirit of respectful dialogue, a free vegetarian meal food will be provided by Saskatoon Food Not Bombs, children are welcome too! Bring songs, poetry or more food!
